Anybody who has been driving for a while knows the problem: You are in the car, all ready to go and do whatever you need to do. You turn the key, and nothing happens. Or maybe you only hear a little click. The engine may even try to turn a few times before it dies. This can only mean one thing – you have a dead battery.
This is a problem, as you obviously need to be somewhere, and can’t be inconvenienced with a dead battery. What is the best way to sort this problem out quickly and with the least amount of trouble? Just give us a call at NK Towing & Roadside Services, and within 30 minutes, we will be with you and have your car started and back on the road in the shortest time possible.
What is a Car Battery?
The lead acid battery has been around for over 150 years. And even though lead is a very heavy metal, lead acid batteries are still the most efficient and reliable form of storing and delivering electricity available, relative to their cost. Lead acid batteries are still used in applications where weight is at a premium, such as airplanes and helicopters.
A 12v vehicle battery is made up of 6 cells, with each cell delivering 2.2v. Inside each cell there are a number of negative and positive plates, and there is always one more negative plate than positive. The plates are lead grids with the holes filled with a lead oxide compound. The compound is slightly different for the positive and negative plates. The plates are separated by an absorbent paper. When constructed, the battery is filled with sulfuric acid, given an initial charge, and then sealed. Once factory sealed, the battery needs no maintenance.
What Can Go Wrong with Your Battery?
The most visible and easily preventable problem with a car battery is corrosion of the terminals. This can be prevented by a little routine maintenance during your car service. Just clean any corrosion off and cover the terminals with a light grease.
The major cause of battery failure is sulfation. This is a buildup of lead sulfate on the battery plates which eventually form a barrier to the electrolytic action necessary for the battery to work. Sulfation can be caused by the battery having a low charge level for long periods of time, very cold weather or, more likely in our area, very hot weather. It is occasionally possible to remove sulfation but, especially for a car battery, the cost is greater than the value of the battery.
Starting the engine is the biggest drain on the battery. A low charge in the battery results when the car is only used for very short journeys, while the travelers use a lot of electrical devices in the car. An occasional longer run in the car can help maintain the battery in better condition for longer.
What to do When You Have a Dead Battery
The quickest and easiest way to have your battery problem sorted out is to give us a call at NK Towing & Roadside Services. Within 30 minutes, we will be with you at your car to resolve the situation to get you back on the move as soon as possible. When our trained and certified engineers arrive, they will test your battery to confirm that the problem is in fact the battery, and not with a different component on your car (such as the generator not providing sufficient charge, for example).
Once the battery is identified as the source of your problem, our engineers can replace the battery. At the same time, the engineer will fit new battery terminals and check the charge rate from the generator, to make sure that you won’t have further problems. At that point, you are ready to get back out on the road.
Top Quality Batteries
At NK Towing & Roadside Services, our AAA battery service is available to both AAA members as well as non-members. We only fit the best quality batteries to your vehicle. All our batteries come with a very long 6-year warranty, so you won’t have the worry that a generic poor-quality battery will be fitted.
What if the Problem is Not the Battery?
Although the symptoms found with your vehicle may match those of a flat battery, this does not necessarily mean that the battery is faulty. There are several other faults that can cause the battery to be flat:
- The generator belt may be too loose. This slack in the belt tension can cause the generator to provide an insufficient charge to keep the battery charged.
- A faulty generator is not providing any charge. This fault will usually show up by the ignition light staying on.
- A short circuit is causing the battery to discharge.
- A starter motor fault can often give the impression that the battery is flat.
One of the major advantages of using the services of a highly reputable company like NK Towing & Roadside Services is that we will fully diagnose the fault before we change any part. In many cases, we can resolve these other issues when we visit you out on the road. If we can’t, we can tow you to the garage of your choice, give them our best diagnosis of the problem, and help out any other way we can.
